The lost honor of ARD

by Markus Langemann //

With this resolute stance, Böll represented the values of Group 47, the intellectual circle that then as now stood for diversity of opinion, critical reflection and respect for those who think differently. Böll's words, which were once regarded as a passionate defense of an open society, now seem like a bitter prophecy. Because the criticism that was directed at the Springer publishing house back then applies with frightening precision to public broadcasting today, especially ARD. The recent debacle surrounding the summer interview with Alice Weidel, leader of the AfD, is symbolic proof of this. An interview that was supposed to contribute to informative clarity turned into a miserable farce - or even a deliberate staging?

The communication scientist Prof. Michael Meyen from the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität in Munich, named the structural imbalance within the public service apparatus, in an interview that I had with him back in 2021:

Journalists who are not only on the left out of ideological conviction, but who act out of a logic that promises them job security. According to Meyen, the profession has become radicalized by its economic precarization and attracts especially those people who are willing to sacrifice income and security in the service of a political mission. This has given rise to a media complex that confirms itself time and again, but has long since lost its role as the fourth estate of control and objectivity. ARD, financed by compulsory contributions from all citizens, has a special responsibility. But instead of standing up for a culture of open discussion and neutral reporting, it creates - in the case of Weidel, apparently deliberately - precisely the atmosphere that Heinrich Böll warned of as early as 1972: agitation, denunciation, a climate of intolerance towards those who think differently. The fact that technical manipulation is also suspected exacerbates the drama.

It is time for a serious reform of the public service media landscape. At the very least, however, it is necessary to relieve people of the financial burden of an institution that not only neglects its obligation to neutrality and objectivity, but deliberately violates it time and again. Heinrich Böll's legacy obliges us to speak loudly and clearly before the last remnants of trust in an institution that was originally created to preserve that very trust are extinguished.

  2. It is infantile of the old, outdated media to believe that they can harm the AfD with such actions. Nothing can prevent their downfall and in the end they will become irrelevant. They have lost their compass, former ARD and ZDF stars are horrified at what has become of the once leading broadcaster. As always, corruption generates less overall social performance compared to open and fair competition. We see this not only in the cultural sector, but also in business and politics.

  3. They can't bark. They can only bark like a trained pack of beagles. Even if Nazi grandson Friedrich Merz appeared with an armband and a moustache, they wouldn't sense the real danger.

They can't do Thomas Mann either. In 1953, he wrote the following sentence in an essay entitled "Comprendre" (published in 1956 in the volume "Nachlese"):

"On the other hand, I am displeased and ashamed of Europe's weak and self-forgetful attachment to America, which is as strangely and contradictorily compatible with that arrogance as the deep respect for the older historical dignity and testedness of our continent that can be observed again and again over there, Europe as an economic colony, a military base, a glacis in the future nuclear crusade against Russia, as a piece of earth that is interesting from an antiquarian point of view and worth visiting, but whose complete ruin will be given the devil's eye when it comes to the battle for world domination."

Written down more than 80 years ago and today almost brand new. When will we ever understand?

  4. The synchronization of the media and the deliberate abuse of institutional power to discredit dissenters has been an unspeakable tradition in Germany since the Third Reich and also during the SED regime.
Now we are witnessing the swan song of democratic rights in an age of self-appointed do-gooders with cheap moralizing and silent spectatorship by the silent majority.
Where is the boundless tolerance principle of large parts of this German society supposed to lead us, if not directly into the abyss of a meaningless fun society, which is so easily abused by ideologues of the green and red colors for their own purposes?
    Poor Germany!

Welcome to this platform for the cultivated exchange of arguments.

We have forgotten how to endure contradiction. It is okay to disagree here. I would ask you to remain respectful and polite. Insults and hate comments will be removed in future, as will calls to vote for political parties. I reserve the right to delete insulting or derogatory comments. This public forum and its inherent opportunity to exchange arguments and opinions is an attempt to uphold freedom of expression - including freedom of dissent. I would like to see the old-fashioned virtue of respect cultivated here.

"Controversy is not an annoying evil, but a necessary prerequisite for the success of democracy." Federal President Dr. h.c. Joachim Gauck (ret.), only 5 years ago in his speech on the Day of the Basic Law.
