Slovakian Prime Minister Fico: Return after attack with political reckoning

by Markus Langemann //

Following the failed assassination attempt on Slovakian Prime Minister Robert Fico, he has spoken publicly for the first time. In a speech lasting around 15 minutes, which was distributed by the government on social media, Fico forgave his assassin and declared that he would not take any legal action against him. He described the attacker as a "messenger of hatred" who was incited by a politically unsuccessful opposition supported by the EU.

Fico said that there was no reason to believe that the attack was the work of a lone madman. He warned that anti-government media, foreign-funded NGOs and the opposition were playing down the assassination and claiming it was just the attack of a madman with no links to the opposition. He emphasized that he had suffered serious damage to his health and severe pain, but was on the road to recovery.

In his speech, Fico sharply criticized the EU and NATO as well as the Slovakian opposition parties and media. He described how EU/NATO rulers have been taking action against his social democratic party SMER for years, stirring up hatred and poisoning the social climate. These measures are due to the fact that SMER pursues a sovereign foreign policy and opposes the aggressive expansion of the EU model and interference in Slovakia's internal affairs.

Fico emphasized that his positions - such as his rejection of the bombing of Yugoslavia, the war in Iraq and the introduction of mandatory migrant quotas - had led to Slovakia becoming isolated in the EU. He criticized the expulsion of the SMER from the European Social Democratic Party and the near expulsion from the Visegrad Group. He also accused the EU of supporting the pro-EU opposition in Slovakia in order to promote political forces that prioritize foreign interests over national laws.

The suspected assassin, 71-year-old Juraj Cintula, was arrested at the scene of the crime. Cintula, who had worked as a miner, teacher and security guard in his professional life and had published several volumes of poetry, was not a member of a political party. However, he had participated in government protests against Fico and had expressed anti-government slogans in the media.

Fico also hinted that international and geopolitical issues played a role. He claimed that large democracies only allow one binding position and reject sovereign positions of small countries. Particularly with regard to the war in Ukraine, which Fico sees as an attempt to weaken the Russian Federation, dissenting opinions would be stigmatized as pro-Russian and ostracized internationally. These geopolitical tensions would be used by the Slovakian opposition to justify violent and hate-filled riots against the state authority.

Fico plans to return to work at the end of June or in July and is currently undergoing medical treatment. Despite repeated operations and severe pain, he appears to be on the road to recovery and remains determined to continue his political work.

  1. What happened to Robert Fico hit me very hard and of course I was sorry, but it was a natural consequence of the polarization that other politicians did not survive. I was all the more pleased by his statement: he is the kind of politician we would like to have in Germany. As long as people vote stupidly and don't rebel, nothing will change. The masterminds are always afraid of the truth, so it has to come to light. And everyone must help! Only the truth ensures freedom. This starts in our personal social environment.
What does our political future look like to me? It doesn't look so hopeful, because the psychological mechanisms are so well adapted today that I can only get out of the fake news and confusion myself if I use my personal eternal anchor.
    I wish that for everyone.

Welcome to this platform for the cultivated exchange of arguments.

We have forgotten how to endure contradiction. It is okay to disagree here. I would ask you to remain respectful and polite. Insults and hate comments will be removed in future, as will calls to vote for political parties. I reserve the right to delete insulting or derogatory comments. This public forum and its inherent opportunity to exchange arguments and opinions is an attempt to uphold freedom of expression - including freedom of dissent. I would like to see the old-fashioned virtue of respect cultivated here.
